Packing for safari was a huge source of stress for me due to luggage weight restrictions and me being someone who wants to prepare for all the “what ifs”. I did pretty well but there are four things I wish I had packed for safari and I’m sharing them with you so you can be better prepared than I was!
I knew that toilets would be in short supply during game drives and it’s probably been a solid 20 years since I’ve peed in nature and a pee funnel would have come in super handy! In hindsight, I’d pack a ziplock with a pee funnel, some stall wipes, an extra ziplock for trash, and either baby wipes or hand sanitizer for when it was time to answer nature’s call in, well, nature!
Keeping with the nature’s call theme, when there were real toilets during my trip, there was often nothing to dry your hands with, so having a small hand towel (like the one I carried in Japan) would have been incredibly useful!
Y’all, the roads in the Serengeti are bouncy! While I certainly wasn’t expecting paved highways, I underestimated how much bouncing around certain body parts would do! I’m not a super busty girl and I would have loved to have a supportive sports bra, so I imagine that people with larger chests would really, really benefit from wearing one!
I packed two pairs of shoes for the trip: train runners and a pair of sandals for dinner and trips to the pool and beach in Zanzibar. I got a lot of use out of both of them, but I would have loved to have a pair of Crocs or some other slip on shoe to wear over socks. And while this sounds peak Florida, there’s a practical purpose. In the safari vehicle I was able to stand on the seats when we were stopped but I had to take my shoes off. My trail runners were a bit of a hassle to get back on if we stopped somewhere that we could get out, so a pair of slip on shoes would have been ideal for that.
