Want to go on a solo trip, but anxious about being a woman traveling alone? Solo female travel is a growing… trend isn’t the right word, because it’s here to stay! So if solo travel is on your wish list, let’s talk about tips and tricks so you can enjoy this exciting experience!
Why Take a Solo Trip
Taking a solo trip can be a life-changing experience that allows you to discover new places, challenge yourself, and develop self-reliance and independence. Solo travel is a fantastic way to break free from the routine and monotony of daily life, giving you the chance to recharge your batteries and return home with a fresh perspective.
One of the most rewarding aspects of solo travel is the opportunity for self-discovery and personal growth. When you travel solo, you have the freedom to explore new interests and hobbies, whether it’s trying local food, learning a new language, or picking up a new skill. Without the influence of others, you can fully immerse yourself in the experience and push beyond your comfort zone.
Solo travel also offers a unique way to connect with nature and the environment. Whether you’re hiking through a national park or strolling through a bustling city, traveling alone allows you to experience different cultures and ways of life on your own terms. Many solo travelers find that this independence helps them develop a deeper sense of self-awareness and self-acceptance.
From a practical standpoint, solo travel can be more cost-effective. You have complete control over your budget and itinerary, allowing you to plan and spend according to your preferences. Additionally, solo trips can be a great way to meet new people and make friends from different cultures and backgrounds. Staying in social hostels or joining group tours can provide opportunities to connect with other solo travelers and share experiences. You can also meet other women travelers through these platforms, offering camaraderie and support during your journey.
Solo Traveling for Women: Start Small
If you’ve never traveled solo before, I wouldn’t suggest jumping in with a month-long solo trip to India. Instead, start small and close to home, getting comfortable with your own company, which will help build the confidence to travel alone.
If you don’t already, go out to dinner alone in your hometown. If you’re already doing this, awesome! If you’re not, you may find it feels uncomfortable and lonely. Whether you choose to sit at a table and read or sit at the bar and chat with the bartender or other patrons, taking this step helps get you used to going dining alone—something you’ll do a lot of when you travel solo. Keep in mind that there’s a big difference between sitting alone at Panera and a MICHELIN star restaurant, but you can start small and work your way up to nicer restaurants as you build your confidence.
If even this feels daunting, start by going to a movie by yourself. In a dark movie theater, no one knows (or cares) that you’re alone. Plus there’s no one to hog the popcorn!
Branch Out: Solo Travel
The next thing I recommend is taking an overnight or a weekend trip close to home. Short trips help build confidence to travel alone, especially for women. Take a little road trip to that nearby city, beach, or mountain town that you’ve always wanted to visit and spend a night or two there. Short trips in your home country are a good way to ease into solo traveling for women travelers.
Go into the trip with a plan, but don’t overschedule yourself so you end up overwhelmed and hiding in your hotel room. If you’re not used to navigating public transit, consider going someplace where it’s used but not essential to test the waters.
If your weekend getaway goes great, consider a weeklong trip in your home country. If you’re based in the US like I am, there are plenty of amazing National Parks, beach towns, mountain towns, and cool cities that you can explore during a weeklong visit.
If it doesn’t go great take some time to assess what went wrong. Did you overplan? Underplan? Choose a destination that wasn’t a great fit for you? Take an honest look at what you might have done differently and apply that information to a future weekend getaway.
However, keep in mind that not every trip goes to plan and sometimes the chaos enhances the trip instead of detracting from it. (And sometimes they’re just plain annoying!) Just like in day-to-day life, things go wrong. You get a flat tire, you’re hangry and miss a turn on your drive, you’ve got insomnia, it rains the day you planned to go to the beach. The bus broke down on your way to a scenic spot. You get the picture.
Part of traveling in general is going in with a plan and rolling with the punches when things don’t go to plan. What’s great about traveling solo is that it can be easier to pivot as a solo traveler than a group. (Only one spot left on the ferry? It’s yours!) That said, sometimes it can be stressful and frustrating to have to be the one making all the plans and all the decisions when things go sideways. I try my hardest to see these changes as opportunities rather than annoyances and I find that for me, that positive mindset goes a long way.
I’ve never done group travel, so I can’t speak from experience, but group trips come with guides who are experienced travelers in the country you’re visiting and that can go a long way to making your first solo trip abroad go smoothly!
Preparing for your solo trip can be both exhilarating and a bit nerve-wracking, especially if it’s your first solo trip. But with the right preparation, you can set yourself up for an amazing adventure.
Research Your Destination: Dive into the local culture, customs, and laws of your chosen destination. Understanding these aspects will help you feel more comfortable and prepared when you arrive.
Plan Your Itinerary: Create a rough outline of your trip, including transportation, accommodation, and activities. Having a plan can help you make the most of your time and reduce stress.
Book Your Flights and Accommodation: Secure your flights and accommodation in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles. This also gives you peace of mind knowing that your essentials are taken care of.
Pack Wisely: Pack light and bring only the essentials. Comfortable clothing, a portable charger, and a money belt are must-haves for any solo trip.
Stay Safe: Look up safety tips for your destination and take necessary precautions. Registering with your government’s travel advisory department can provide an extra layer of security.
By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared for your first solo trip, ready to embrace the adventure with confidence.
Go International: Traveling Alone
If traveling solo in your home country was your end goal, awesome! If you’ve always dreamt of going to Paris in the spring or summering in Italy, you can approach that with more confidence once you’ve gotten comfortable with international travel alone.
That said, solo female travel in foreign countries comes with additional challenges: language differences, different currencies, and time zone changes, to name a few. You can absolutely dive in and go it alone and start with a short trip abroad, but if you’re still a bit apprehensive, consider taking a group trip!
However, if you are going fully solo, there are a few things you can do to help your trip go off without a hitch!
Research
These days TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube are full of travel content! And while I find TikTok and Instagram great for inspiration, I think YouTube is the most helpful for practical information, especially for a solo female traveler.
Did you know you can watch a step-by-step video on YouTube on how to navigate from Pisa Airport to the nearby train station? Videos like that are great to set your mind at ease whether it’s a domestic or foreign country as you can see what you’re getting into before you get there!
Arrive Safely
Women traveling should avoid arriving in a new destination after dark. It’s important to get a lay of the land and get to your hotel or AirBNB in daylight (especially if you’re taking public transportation to do so). If arriving in daylight isn’t possible due to flight schedules, make sure to arrange a pre-paid private transfer to where you’re staying. It costs a little more, but for peace of mind, it’s worth it.
Get the Lay of the Land: Solo Female Travelers
I love booking a walking tour on my first full morning in a new city to get the lay of the land, especially for female travelers. The guides are a wealth of information about places to visit (and avoid) and can offer great suggestions for restaurants and activities you may not have come across in your pre-trip research.
Know Yourself: Self Discovery
For a long time, I fell into the trap of trying to do everything in a destination. I was there and I wanted to see it all. But I would end up cranky and exhausted and often get sick from being run down. So I’ve learned my limits and plan and pre-book some activities, but don’t pack my days so full that I’m running from dusk till dawn. Know yourself, know your limits, and plan your itinerary accordingly. It’s the best form of self care you can do while traveling alone and allows you to explore at your own schedule!
Choosing the right destination for your solo trip can feel overwhelming with so many incredible places to explore.
Consider Your Interests: Think about what you love to do and what you hope to get out of your trip. Whether it’s relaxing on a beach, exploring a vibrant city, or embarking on an adventure, choose a destination that aligns with your passions.
Research Safety: Look into the safety of potential destinations. Check travel advisories and read up on any specific precautions you should take.
Think About Your Budget: Consider the cost of flights, accommodation, and activities. Choose a destination that fits within your budget to avoid financial stress.
Consider the Time of Year: Think about the weather and any festivals or events happening during your trip. This can greatly impact your experience.
By taking these factors into account, you can choose a destination that’s perfect for your solo trip, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable experience.
Solo travel can be challenging, especially for women, due to safety concerns and cultural differences. However, with proper planning and preparation, many of these challenges can be overcome.
Research and Plan Ahead: Knowledge is power. Thoroughly research your destination, including local customs, safety tips, and transportation options. Having a well-thought-out plan can help you feel more confident and prepared.
Be Flexible and Adaptable: Travel often comes with unexpected changes. Embrace the unpredictability and be ready to adapt to new circumstances. Flexibility can turn potential setbacks into exciting adventures.
Stay Open-Minded: Traveling solo is an excellent opportunity to learn about new cultures and experiences. Approach each new situation with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
Build Confidence: Trust in your abilities and judgment. Confidence can be your best ally when navigating unfamiliar territories.
Seek Help When Needed: Don’t hesitate to ask for help or support. Whether it’s asking locals for directions or seeking advice from other solo travelers, reaching out can make your journey smoother and more enjoyable.
Remember, solo travel is a personal choice, and it’s perfectly okay to take things at your own pace. If you need a break or feel overwhelmed, give yourself permission to rest and recharge. Many solo travelers find it helpful to join online communities or forums where they can connect with other solo travelers, share tips, and seek advice. These communities can provide a sense of camaraderie and support, making your solo travel experience even more enriching. Additionally, these platforms offer opportunities to meet other women travelers, further enhancing your journey with shared experiences and mutual support.
By addressing these fears and challenges head-on, you can turn your solo travel dreams into a reality, opening the door to a world of new experiences and personal growth.
Meeting other travelers can significantly enhance your solo travel experience, providing companionship and shared adventures.
Stay in Social Hostels: Social hostels are fantastic for meeting other travelers. They often have communal areas and organize events, making it easy to strike up conversations.
Join Group Tours: Group tours are a great way to meet people with similar interests. Plus, they can provide a sense of security and structure to your trip.
Attend Local Events: Festivals, concerts, and other local events are perfect for meeting both travelers and locals. They offer a fun way to immerse yourself in the culture.
Use Social Media: Join solo travel groups on social media platforms. These communities are great for connecting with other solo travelers and planning meetups.
Be Open-Minded: Approach new situations with an open mind and be willing to start conversations. You never know who you might meet and what friendships you might form.
By following these tips, you can meet other travelers and enrich your solo travel experience, making it even more rewarding and enjoyable. Happy travels!
