One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether you want to stay inside Lucca’s historic city walls or outside them.

Personally, if you’re visiting Lucca for the first time, I’d strongly consider staying inside the walls.

You’ll be surrounded by medieval streets, beautiful piazzas, historic churches, restaurants, cafés, and shops—and most of Lucca’s major attractions will be within easy walking distance.

The good news is that there are plenty of hotels inside Lucca’s city walls, from elegant full-service hotels to tiny boutique properties with just a handful of rooms.

I’ve rounded up 10 of the best hotels inside Lucca’s historic center, with options for different budgets and travel styles.

And since I know many of you are traveling solo, I’ve also pointed out a few things that can make a hotel particularly appealing for solo travelers—like location, breakfast, parking, elevators, and the ability to walk everywhere.

Why Stay Inside Lucca’s City Walls?

Before we get to the hotels, let’s talk about why I’d choose a hotel inside the walls in the first place.

Lucca’s historic center is surrounded by its beautifully preserved Renaissance walls, and staying inside them means you’re right in the middle of the action.

You can walk to:

• Piazza dell’Anfiteatro
• Torre Guinigi
• Lucca Cathedral
• Piazza San Michele
• Via Fillungo
• Restaurants and cafés
• The Lucca city walls
• Many of Lucca’s museums and historic sights

You also don’t have to worry about finding transportation every time you want to go somewhere.

And if you’re traveling solo, that’s a big plus.

You can walk out of your hotel in the evening, have dinner, stop for gelato, and walk back to your room without having to arrange a taxi or figure out public transportation.

That’s one of the things I love about staying in historic city centers when I travel.

One Thing to Know Before Booking

There is a trade-off.

Some historic hotels inside the walls are located in centuries-old buildings, which means elevators aren’t always available.

You may also encounter stairs, narrow hallways, smaller rooms, or limited vehicle access.

So don’t just look at the photos!

Check the hotel’s accessibility information and make sure the property works for you before booking.

Best luxury hotel: Grand Universe Lucca

Best for: Luxury, amenities, Marriott Bonvoy members

If you prefer a full-service hotel with the amenities of a larger property, Grand Universe Lucca is probably the obvious choice.

Located right in the heart of Lucca near Piazza Napoleone, this historic hotel is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection.

It’s a completely different experience from the tiny boutique properties elsewhere on this list.

You’ll find a restaurant, bars, fitness center, room service, and other full-service amenities, while the building itself incorporates historic elements.

There’s also a rooftop bar, Sommità, with panoramic views over Lucca.

And if you’re a Marriott Bonvoy member, this may be an especially appealing option.

One thing to know before you book: the hotel is inside Lucca’s limited-traffic zone (LTZ), so you’ll need to coordinate vehicle access with the hotel if you’re driving. Parking is off-site.

Best for: Suites, longer stays, apartment-style accommodations

Grand Universe La Residenza is an annex of Grand Universe Lucca and gives you a slightly different type of stay.

Located inside the city walls near the train station, it offers a small collection of suites and residences, including larger options such as two-bedroom apartments.

That can be particularly appealing if you’re staying in Lucca for several nights or simply like having more space than a traditional hotel room provides.

Guests can also access many of the amenities at the main Grand Universe property.

Why I like it for this list: It’s a nice middle ground between a hotel and an apartment.

Book it if: You want more space or you’re staying in Lucca for several nights.

Best for a traditional Lucca stay: Hotel San Martino & Dependance

Best for: A small hotel with a central location

Hotel San Martino and its sister property, the Dependance, offer a more intimate alternative to the larger Grand Universe.

Together, the properties have fewer than 30 rooms and share amenities including the bar and breakfast area at Hotel San Martino.

The location is excellent for exploring the historic center, and you’re within easy walking distance of Lucca’s cathedral and many other sights.

One thing to keep in mind is that these historic properties don’t have lifts, so they may not be the best choice if stairs are an issue for you.

Why I like it for this list: It’s small and central without being quite as tiny as some of the guesthouses on this list.

Book it if: You want a traditional hotel experience in a convenient location.

Best for historic charm: Il Pozzo di Santa Zita

Best for: Historic atmosphere and boutique charm

If the idea of staying in an actual historic building sounds more appealing than a modern hotel, take a look at Il Pozzo di Santa Zita.

This tiny boutique property has just five rooms in a renovated 16th-century palace.

The rooms are individually decorated and have private bathrooms, giving the property a much more intimate feel than a traditional hotel.

But there is an important caveat:

There is no elevator, and you’ll need to climb steep stairs.

That’s something I’d definitely want to know before booking.

For travelers who are comfortable with the stairs, though, this is exactly the kind of atmospheric stay that makes visiting a city like Lucca so memorable.

Why I like it for this list: Five rooms in a 16th-century palace? That’s pretty hard to beat for atmosphere.

Book it if: Historic charm matters more to you than modern hotel amenities.

Palazzo Dipinto is another beautiful option if you’re looking for something smaller and more stylish.

The property combines modern design with the character of the historic building, so you get some of the best of both worlds.

There’s also a bar, and the hotel is wonderfully positioned for exploring the city on foot.

If your ideal Lucca stay involves walking out your door and immediately being surrounded by gorgeous historic architecture, restaurants, and shops, this is a strong contender.

Current traveler reviews also continue to rate Palazzo Dipinto highly, particularly for its location and overall stay experience.

Why I like it for this list: It feels special without being enormous or overly formal.

Book it if: You want a stylish boutique hotel in the heart of Lucca.

Best for: A quiet, apartment-style stay

Residenza FillAnfi is a very different type of accommodation from the larger hotels on this list.

With just five rooms, it’s essentially a small residence rather than a traditional full-service hotel.

The rooms are spacious and include private bathrooms and air conditioning, and there’s a shared kitchen where you can make coffee or prepare something simple.

That could be especially useful if you’re staying for several nights and don’t want to eat every meal in a restaurant.

It’s also pet-friendly.

Why I like it for this list: It feels more like having your own little place in Lucca than staying at a conventional hotel.

Book it if: You prefer small, quiet accommodations and don’t need a restaurant or bar on-site.

Best for: Solo travelers and historic charm

Here’s one I think solo travelers should take a particularly close look at.

A Palazzo Busdraghi is a small historic residence on Via Fillungo with just eight rooms.

Because it’s such a small property, it has a much more intimate feel than a larger hotel.

And one of the room categories is a Small French Single, which can be a great option for solo travelers who don’t want to pay for a double room they’ll never use.

Larger rooms are also available if you’re looking for more space, and some have extras such as jacuzzi tubs and workspaces.

Breakfast is included, and additional services such as parking and airport transfers are available for a fee.

Why I like it for this list: A room designed for one person is always worth highlighting on a solo travel site!

Book it if: You’re traveling solo and want a charming historic hotel without automatically paying for a larger room.

Best for: Convenience and accessibility

Relais Inn Lucca has just 10 rooms and suites, making it another small-property option.

If you’re traveling with a car, paid parking is also available nearby.

Best for: Location, location, location!

If you want to be right in the middle of Lucca’s historic center, Residenza Centro Storico is hard to beat.

This tiny property has just six ensuite rooms in a renovated 16th-century building, and it’s located just steps from Piazza San Michele.

There’s also a shared kitchen, which gives guests a little more flexibility than a traditional hotel.

Pets are welcome, too.

But the biggest selling point is the location.

You’re right where you want to be for exploring Lucca on foot.

Why I like it for this list: Six rooms, a historic building, and a location in the heart of the city? That’s very Lucca.

Book it if: Being central is your top priority.

Best for: Amenities, location, and solo travelers

I’m adding Hotel Ilaria because I think it fills a gap in this list.

It’s inside Lucca’s historic walls, but unlike some of the tiny historic properties, it offers a useful combination of amenities and convenience.

The hotel occupies historic buildings, including former stables of Villa Bottini and a 14th-century church, while the rooms have been updated with modern comforts.

There’s a complimentary breakfast, free bicycles, a terrace with a jacuzzi, and 24-hour staff assistance.

Parking is also available, including EV charging.

And the location is excellent—you can walk from the hotel to Lucca’s major sights, restaurants, and the city walls.

It’s also currently very well regarded by travelers; current listings show strong guest scores and particularly positive feedback about its location, breakfast, and overall experience.

Why I like it for this list: It gives you some of the charm of a smaller Lucca property while adding amenities that make a stay easier.

Book it if: You want a central hotel with breakfast, bikes, and a few extra amenities.

Is It Better to Stay Inside or Outside Lucca’s City Walls?

If you’re visiting Lucca for the first time, I’d stay inside the walls if your budget allows.

That’s especially true if you’re only staying one or two nights.

You’ll save time getting to the sights, restaurants, and shops, and you can easily return to your hotel during the day if you need a break.

It’s also wonderful in the evening.

Once some of the day-trippers have left, Lucca takes on a quieter, more local feeling. You can have dinner, wander the streets, and enjoy the city without worrying about getting back to a hotel outside the historic center.

That said, staying outside the walls can make sense if:

• You have a car and want easy parking
• You’re looking for a pool or larger resort-style property
• You want more space for your money
• You’re staying several nights and plan to explore the surrounding countryside
• You don’t mind walking or driving into the historic center

For a classic first visit, though?

Inside the walls gets my vote.

Tips for Booking a Hotel in Lucca

Before you click that “Reserve” button, there are a few things I’d check.

Check the stairs

Historic buildings are wonderful—but some don’t have elevators.

If stairs are a concern, look carefully at the hotel’s accessibility information before booking.

Think about your luggage

If you’re arriving by train and staying inside the walls, you may be walking with your luggage from the station to your hotel.

Those cobblestones are charming.

They’re less charming when you’re dragging a giant suitcase over them.

Pack accordingly!

Check parking if you’re driving

Lucca’s historic center has limited vehicle access, and parking isn’t necessarily included with your hotel.

If you’re driving, check the hotel’s parking situation before you arrive.

Book early in peak season

Lucca is popular, and the smaller boutique hotels have very few rooms.

If you have your heart set on a particular property, don’t wait until the last minute—especially during the summer or major events such as Lucca Summer Festival and Lucca Comics & Games.

Compare the total cost

A hotel that looks cheaper at first glance isn’t always cheaper once you add breakfast, parking, taxes, or other fees.

I like to compare the total cost of the stay, not just the nightly rate.

Where to Stay in Lucca for a Solo Trip

If you’re traveling to Lucca solo, I’d prioritize three things:

Location. Walkability. Comfort.

You don’t necessarily need a huge hotel with every possible amenity.

I’d rather be able to walk out my door and immediately be in the historic center.

That’s one reason properties like A Palazzo Busdraghi, Hotel Ilaria, Palazzo Dipinto, and Residenza Centro Storico stand out to me for solo travelers.

And staying inside the walls means that if you’re out having dinner or exploring in the evening, you’re never far from your hotel.

That’s a small thing—but when you’re traveling alone, those little conveniences can make a big difference.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Lucca

There isn’t one perfect hotel in Lucca for everyone.

And honestly, that’s a good thing.

If you want luxury and amenities, there’s Grand Universe Lucca.

If you want a tiny boutique property with historic character, look at Il Pozzo di Santa Zita or Palazzo Dipinto.

If you’re traveling solo, A Palazzo Busdraghi is worth a look.

And if you want a central hotel with a few extra amenities, Hotel Ilaria is a strong option.

But regardless of which hotel you choose, my biggest piece of advice is this:

Stay inside the walls if you can.

There’s something pretty magical about waking up in the middle of Lucca’s historic center, walking out your door, and having Tuscany right there waiting for you.

And when you’re done sightseeing for the day, you don’t have to go anywhere.

Just walk back to your hotel.
