<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before we get to the hotels, let&#8217;s talk about why I&#8217;d choose a hotel inside the walls in the first place.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lucca&#8217;s historic center is surrounded by its beautifully preserved Renaissance walls, and staying inside them means you&#8217;re right in the middle of the action.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can walk to:</p>

<li>Torre Guinigi</li>



<li>Lucca Cathedral</li>



<li>Piazza San Michele</li>



<li>Via Fillungo</li>

<li>Many of Lucca&#8217;s museums and historic sights</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You also don&#8217;t have to worry about finding transportation every time you want to go somewhere.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if you&#8217;re traveling solo, that&#8217;s a big plus.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can walk out of your hotel in the evening, have dinner, stop for gelato, and walk back to your room without having to arrange a taxi or figure out public transportation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some historic hotels inside the walls are located in centuries-old buildings, which means <strong>elevators aren&#8217;t always available</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You may also encounter stairs, narrow hallways, smaller rooms, or limited vehicle access.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So don&#8217;t just look at the photos!</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Check the hotel&#8217;s accessibility information and make sure the property works for you before booking.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you prefer a full-service hotel with the amenities of a larger property, <strong>Grand Universe Lucca</strong> is probably the obvious choice.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Located right in the heart of Lucca near Piazza Napoleone, this historic hotel is part of Marriott&#8217;s Autograph Collection.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s a completely different experience from the tiny boutique properties elsewhere on this list.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You&#8217;ll find a restaurant, bars, fitness center, room service, and other full-service amenities, while the building itself incorporates historic elements.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There&#8217;s also a rooftop bar, Sommità, with panoramic views over Lucca.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if you&#8217;re a Marriott Bonvoy member, this may be an especially appealing option.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One thing to know before you book: the hotel is inside Lucca&#8217;s limited-traffic zone (LTZ), so you&#8217;ll need to coordinate vehicle access with the hotel if you&#8217;re driving. Parking is off-site.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Grand Universe La Residenza is an annex of Grand Universe Lucca and gives you a slightly different type of stay.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Located inside the city walls near the train station, it offers a small collection of suites and residences, including larger options such as two-bedroom apartments.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That can be particularly appealing if you&#8217;re staying in Lucca for several nights or simply like having more space than a traditional hotel room provides.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Guests can also access many of the amenities at the main Grand Universe property.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Why I like it for this list:</strong> It&#8217;s a nice middle ground between a hotel and an apartment.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The location is excellent for exploring the historic center, and you&#8217;re within easy walking distance of Lucca&#8217;s cathedral and many other sights.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One thing to keep in mind is that these historic properties don&#8217;t have lifts, so they may not be the best choice if stairs are an issue for you.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Why I like it for this list:</strong> It&#8217;s small and central without being quite as tiny as some of the guesthouses on this list.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Book it if:</strong> You want a traditional hotel experience in a convenient location.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If the idea of staying in an actual historic building sounds more appealing than a modern hotel, take a look at <strong>Il Pozzo di Santa Zita</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This tiny boutique property has just five rooms in a renovated 16th-century palace.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The rooms are individually decorated and have private bathrooms, giving the property a much more intimate feel than a traditional hotel.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But there is an important caveat:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>There is no elevator, and you&#8217;ll need to climb steep stairs.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That&#8217;s something I&#8217;d definitely want to know before booking.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For travelers who are comfortable with the stairs, though, this is exactly the kind of atmospheric stay that makes visiting a city like Lucca so memorable.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;re arriving by train and staying inside the walls, you may be walking with your luggage from the station to your hotel.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you want a tiny boutique property with historic character, look at <strong>Il Pozzo di Santa Zita</strong> or <strong>Palazzo Dipinto</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;re traveling solo, <strong>A Palazzo Busdraghi</strong> is worth a look.</p>
